Downtown Office Workers Sought to Mentor Springfield Students

Children are our future, and what better way to help them achieve the brightest future than to mentor them and become a school volunteer.

For just one hour a week during the school year, you can help one child or several through a variety of opportunities, including the Read Aloud program, one-on-one mentors, academic tours and much more.

The Step Up Springfield campaign is aiming to link schools and community through the Springfield School Volunteers program.  By getting involved, your business or organization will benefit in the following ways:

  • Employees released to volunteer come back to the workplace energized.
Many businesses, colleges and organizations provide weekly volunteers to work one-on-one with students as academic tutors, mentors or enrichment volunteers. These employees are energized by and proud of their organization's commitment to education.
  • Participation in the School-to-Career transition enables you to have impact on the training of your future workforce.
Career-oriented programs, job-site tours, and workplace experiences provide the important link for students to succeed as employees or in higher education.
  • Sharing your organization's management training opportunities offers educators an invaluable resource.
Administrators and teachers work hard to respond to the changes happening inside and outside education. Sharing corporate training and continuous improvement ideas gives them the additional skills necessary to better educate our students.
  • Donating surplus equipment and materials gives you a tax deduction.
Our school can put your surplus equipment, furniture, and supplies to very good use!
  • It's good for business to have a strong public school system
When your business is working to make the school system the best it can be, everyone wins... students as their attendance and grades improve and our community as it gets the quality school system it deserves.

Whether you are interested in volunteering on your own or through your business/organization, you can find out more about the Springfield School Volunteers program by stopping by their information table in the Citywalk Cafes food court from 11:30am 1:30pm on Thursday, September 11 and on Wednesday, September 17th.

You can also contact them at 413-787-7015 or www.SpringfieldSchoolVolunteers.org.

Downtown Workers & Residents Asked to Support the

Tower Square - USO Food Drive to Aid Westover Families

While many local military personnel are away serving in Iraq and other troubled areas around the world, their loved ones are here keeping the home fires burning.  But with the current state of flux in the economy, keeping those fires burning this winter will become increasingly difficult for some military families trying to make ends meet while their breadwinner is away at war.

To help families in need at Westover, there will be a food drive in the Citywalk Cafes food court September 911 from Noon 1pm.  On those days you can drop off non-perishable food items, toiletries or monetary contributions to be given to the USO Pioneer Valley Chapter at Westover, who will distribute them to those in need.

The USO (United Service Organizations) has been the bridge between the American public and the US military in times of peace and war dating back before the US entered World War II.  Their goal is to provide comfort, morale and recreational services to the military and their immediate family.  The USO, a congressionally chartered, private nonprofit organization, relies on the generosity of individuals and corporations.

For additional information about how you can support the USO by donations or volunteering your time, you can contact the Pioneer Valley Chapter of the USO at (413) 557-3290.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH!

Baked Tomatoes Stuffed with Salmon, Garlic and Capers

1 tablespoon capers, preferably packed in salt

1 pound salmon

3 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon chopped Italian flat leaf parsley

1 teaspoon very finely chopped garlic

2 tablespoons fine, dry, unflavored bread crumbs

salt

black pepper ground fresh

2 large ripe, firm tomatoes, weighing approximately 3/4 pound each

Drain the capers if packed in vinegar; soak, rinse and drain if packed in salt, then chop them fine. Turn the oven on to 400F.

Remove the salmon's skin, any loose membranes and carefully pick out all bones. Cut the fish into very small pieces, dice and put in a bowl together with 2-1/2 tablespoons of olive oil, the chopped parsley, garlic, capers, 1 tablespoon of bread crumbs, salt and several grindings of black pepper. Toss thoroughly. Wash the tomatoes, cut them horizontally in half, scoop out all the seeds and the centers to make a cup like hollow. Pat the inside of the tomatoes with paper towels to soak up excess juice, then stuff them with the salmon mixture, pressing it down lightly as you do so. There should be enough to form a mound. Sprinkle the tops with the remaining bread crumbs and drizzle with remaining olive oil, holding back a few drops of the latter to smear the bottom of a baking pan. Place the tomatoes on the baking pan and bake in the upper level of the preheated oven for 35 minutes or until the salmon stuffing has formed a light golden crust. Serve not piping hot, but lukewarm. They are also good later, at room temperature, but not reheated. Serves 4.

What's In Season in MA This Month?

There is nothing quite like the taste of fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables. Purchasing locally grown produce is not only a health choice, but is also a way to support local farmers.  Did you know that that you can still get quite a variety of locally grown produce here in Massachusetts in the month of September?  Below is a list of the produce that is available in the state this month.

Apples, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Corn, Cranberries, Eggplant, Lettuce, Onions, Peaches, Peas, Peppers, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Radishes, Rasperries, Scallions, Spinach, Summer Squash, Tomatoes, Turnips, Watermelon, Winter Squash.

International Produce...Impacts Global Warming

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, food shipped by air really racks up global warming emissions. Here's a hotlist of commonly air-freighted foods and their country of origin. If you can, purchase these items at a local farmer's market when they're in season. (They'll taste a lot better, too!).

Asparagus (Peru)

Bell peppers (Netherlands)

Tomatoes (Netherlands)

Blackberries (Chile)

Blueberries (Argentina)

Cherries (Chile)

Raspberries (Chile)

Peaches (Chile)

Nectarines (Chile)
