WHAT'S HAPPENING IN MARCH

Renowned Photographer Shelby Lee Adams Coming to Valley Photo Center

His thought provoking photographs are on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the New York Museum of Modern Art to name just a couple.

But you do not have to travel to New York or Washington to see the images captured thru the lens of 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship Award winning photographer Shelby Lee Adams.

Adams will be the guest speaker at a special Gallery Talk and Slide Presentation to be held at the Valley Photo Center on Saturday, March 31 from 2:30 4pm.

Adams, called an American Environmental Portrait photographer, is known for his images of the "holler dwellers" of Appalachia in Eastern Kentucky.  He was first introduced to these enigmatic peoples as a youngster traveling the state of Kentucky with his uncle who was a doctor.  Over time, Adams established a relationship with families of Appalachia who allowed him into their lives, camera and all over the span of 30 years.

The outcome is four books of images capturing perhaps the poorest of the poor in our nation.  His published books include:  Appalachian Portraits, Appalachian Legacy, Appalachian Lives and Salt and Truth.

Adams will discuss his work and show his images as part of the New England Large Format Photography Collective Annual Membership Show held at the Valley Photo Center at Tower Square this month.

Want More Money in Your Pocket?

Here's A Workshop Just for YOU!

Want to cut your grocery bill by thirty to fifty percent?  Want to find out how to get products and services for free?

As a knee-jerk reaction to issues in the Middle East continues to cause a spike in the price of gasoline, and the ticket price on groceries and most everything else is climbing right along with it, who couldn't use some insight on how to save money, right?

As part of their In The Black Series the Pan African Historical Museum USA (PAHMUSA) is teaming up with Jana Allen to offer the More Money N my Pocket Workshop set for Saturday, March 3 from 4-7pm at PAHMUSA.

This exciting, interactive workshop will both entertain and educate you with games and gift prizes.  Light refreshments will also be provided.  The cost to attend is $10.  RSVP at:  MoreMoneyNmyPocket@gmail.com or call 413.219.0446.

The PAHMUSA In The Black Series is an educational series about African American entrepreneurs from 1700 to 1800.  The series focuses on the successes of these entrepreneurs despite the great odds against them.  Jana Allen's More Money N my Pocket workshop celebrates this entrepreneurial spirit in the 21st Century.

Tower Square Tenants Showcase Talent

Three of Tower Square's tenants showcased their talent, skill and know-how during last month's Black History celebration.

The activities kicked off with a fashion show entitled From Africa To America, featuring many original designs by Tower Square tenant Diane Evans, owner of Something to Talk About boutique on street level.

Paying tribute to black chefs of the White House, the Pan African Historical Museum USA brought in skilled professional Chef Ivy McDonald, who prepared and served Curry Shrimp for those who attended the PAHMUSA Cooking Demonstration.   While Chef Ivy was cooking, PAHMUSA Executive Director LuJuana Hood shared fascinating history and amusing anecdotes with the audience.

The three-day celebration concluded with song and dance performed by the DREAM Studios dancers.  Executive Director Benjamin Smith produced the presentation entitled From Tribulation to Jubilation, which was performed by talented local dancers from seven years old and up.

This is the fourth year that Dream Studios, PAHMUSA and Something to Talk About have brought their talents and expertise to the forefront for the enjoyment of Tower Square's patrons in celebration of Black History month.
