What's Happening at Tower Square - July 2008

Celebrate America at
Star Spangled Springfield Event on July 4!

Tower Square is pleased to join the MassMutual Financial Group, the City of Springfield and other sponsors of Star Spangled Springfield to Celebrate America on Friday, July 4th.

The annual Star Spangled Springfield celebration is presented each year by the Spirit of Springfield.  In keeping with the flavor of Independence Day, the theme of this year's July 4th event will be Celebrate America.

To begin the patriotic festivities, Star Spangled Springfield will feature an all-American review, a sing-a-long as well as several local artists who will be performing on the City Hall Esplanade, beginning at 7:30pm.

At 9:30pm, Fireworks by Grucci will be launched from the Memorial Bridge, lighting up the skies over Springfield while a musical simulcast is transmitted by MIX 93.1 FM.

All of the Star Spangled Springfield entertainment is free and open to the public.  So grab Grandma and the kids and come downtown to enjoy the fun family festivities!

The Downtown Market Heats Up

Tower Square Park on WEDNESDAYS

Whether you are looking for another "green" option by purchasing an all natural woven-hemp bag or you want healthy herbal cooking oils or the freshest in seasonal produce and plants, you will want to check out The Downtown Market.

The Downtown Market at Tower Square Park runs from 10am 3pm every Wednesday, featuring a variety of local vendors, including local farmers, crafters, artisans, retail & food vendors.

A highlight of the market is the CityBlock Lunchtime Concert series.  Every Wednesday from noon 1:30, one of many popular regional bands will perform at The Downtown Market.  So grab your lunch from the food court or one of the vendors at the market, and have a seat under a tent or in the sunshine, and enjoy some mid-week music.

The Downtown Market is sponsored by www.SpringfieldDowntown.com and Tower Square.

WHAT'S IN SEASON

at The Downtown Market For JULY?

If you've come to The Downtown Market on Wednesdays, and aren't sure when to expect to be able to make the first of the season purchase of strawberries, corn or other produce favorites, perhaps you will find the information below to be helpful.

As this is a locally-grown market, the produce you find here is what the farmers are growing in their fields each month.  To help you know what produce is available in Massachusetts, here is a list of what's in season for the month of July:

Asparagus, Beans, Beets, Blueberries,

Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumber,

Greens, Lettuce, Onions,

Peas, Peppers, Potatoes, Radishes,

Scallions, Spinach, Strawberries, Summer Squash.

Now that you know what produce you can get at The Downtown Market this month, why not put those fresh seasonal delicacies together to create a delicious healthy dish.

Recipe of the Month

Spring Vegetable Pappardelle
(Chef Hugo Matheson, The Kitchen Caf )

  • 1 packet pappardelle pasta
  • 1 c freshly shelled  peas
  • 1 c freshly shelled fava beans
  • 1 c tender asparagus, chopped into 1/2-inch sticks
  • 1/4 c extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, sliced
  • pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 c heavy cream
  • 10 fresh mint leaves, chopped
  • 1 c freshly grated Parmesan or pecorino cheese
  • salt and pepper

Bring a large pot of salted water to a strong boil. Add pasta and return to a boil.

Add peas, beans and asparagus. Bring back to a boil and cook until the pasta still has a bite -- about 6 to 8 minutes more.

While cooking the pasta and vegetables, heat a large saut pan to medium-high. Add olive oil, garlic and crushed red pepper flakes. Just when garlic starts to brown, add cream.

Drain cooked pasta and vegetables, keeping a little of the water (to thin the sauce, if needed). Add pasta and vegetables to the sauce.

Sprinkle in chopped mint and half of the cheese; toss to coat everything well.

Season with salt and pepper. If the sauce is too thick, add a little of the cooking water.

To serve, top with remaining cheese and a good glug of olive oil.

Bon apetit!

Is High Blood Pressure Killing You?

From the CVS Pharmacist

High blood pressure, sometimes called the 'silent killer,' is one of the most widespread health conditions in America today. It is estimated that one in every four adults in the United States has high blood pressure. A characteristic that sets high blood pressure apart from various other common health problems is that many people who are affected by it don't realize it because, in general, having high blood pressure doesn't make a person feel sick. Approximately one third of the fifty million Americans with high blood pressure don't know they have the disease. High blood pressure increases your risk for heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke.

The Good News About High Blood Pressure is that it is easy to measure and monitor. Your physician is the only person who can diagnose you with high blood pressure and it is recommended that you have your blood pressure checked each time you meet with a health care professional. The most accurate and reliable way to have your blood pressure checked is to have it done at a doctor's office with a traditional mercury blood pressure monitor. However, the doctor's office isn't the only place to have your blood pressure checked. Many pharmacies and supermarkets offer
convenient electronic devices that allow people to monitor their blood pressure.

You can also purchase your own Blood Pressure monitor. CVS.com has a number of different home blood pressure monitors that you can buy. You can also get some of these models at your local CVS/pharmacy. Talk to your doctor to find out if monitoring your blood pressure at home is right for you.
