WHAT'S HAPPENING IN FEBRUARY

From Africa to America...Black History Comes Alive at Tower Square

Four of Tower Square's tenants will be offering insightful, educational and entertaining activities and events this month in celebration of Black History month.

Throughout the month of February, Artist Square Group Gallery will have a special exhibit featuring the work of local black artists, as well as art depicting the black experience.  Artist Square is located on the upper level adjacent to the food court.

On Wednesday, February 22nd, fashion designer and owner of Something To Talk About boutique, Diane Evans, will present a fashion show entitled "From Africa to America", in the Citywalk Cafes during lunchtime.  Diane's fashions will include original works made from authentic African mud cloth, as well as more Americanized pieces available at her store on street level.

The public is invited to bring their lunch and stop by the Pan African Historical Museum on Thursday, February 23rd at noon for traditional African storytelling, featuring Senegalese storyteller and musician Amadou Talla.  PAHMUSA, located on the upper level on the Bridge Street side of the building, is a multi-room museum housing artifacts from Africa and early America.  Tours of the museum are also available.

Then on Friday, February 24th students from DREAM Studios will perform excerpts from the musical Tribulation to Jubilation featuring poem, dance and theatrical readings.  This performance will take place in the Citywalk Cafes food court at noon.

So mark your calendar and plan to celebrate Black History at Tower Square.

Three-Man Exhibit Brings Different Views to the Valley Photo Center

A special three-man photography exhibit at the Valley Photo Center at Tower Square captures the imagination and transports the viewer through the camera lens to other lands and other realities.

The work of three area photographers is on display at the Valley Photo Center thru March 2nd.

Richard Swiatlowski, Keith Sikes and Shawn Davis say they all learned the basics of photography by watching their fathers.  They went on to express their own passion for the visual and have created some beautiful images, which are on display for the public to enjoy at the Valley Photo Center this month.

While they may draw on the same source, the work of these three men is quite different in presentation.  Swiatlowski is "painterly" and masterful with his use of Photoshop and mixed media.  Sikes is an old-style street photographer, who has a knack for capturing images that represent a slice of life without the pose.  Meanwhile, Davis is a skilled photographer who has an eye for the unique.

The public is invited to stop by the Valley Photo Center located on the upper level adjacent to the food court during regular gallery hours.  The gallery is open Tuesday Friday from 11am 2pm.  Admission is free.

There will be a special artist reception open to the public on Thursday, February 2nd 6-8pm.  You are invited to stop by and meet the featured photographers as well as other artists and photography enthusiasts, and enjoy refreshments.
