Black History Month Celebration Scheduled

Tower Square tenants and patrons will have the opportunity to be entertained and educated during a weeklong series of Black History Month celebratory events sponsored by the Pan African Historical Museums USA (PAHMUSA), Dream Studio and Something 2 Talk About.

The celebration kicks off on Tuesday, February 19 at noon in Center Court with comments by Darryl Moss, mayoral aide to Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, regarding the relevance of Black History Month. Moss' comments will be followed by a fashion show featuring clothing from Something 2 Talk About. Local artist Rosemary Woods will also have a special exhibit entitled Art for the Soul on display.

On Wednesday, February 20, PAHMUSA will present a cooking demonstration at noon in Center Court with African chef Oulematou Jordan, preparing a popular chicken and red rice dish called Thiebou Guinar. Taste samples will be offered.

All four of the PAHMUSA galleries on the upper level of Tower Square will be open for free tours on Thursday, February 21 from noon - 2pm. Two of the galleries feature educational exhibits and artifacts, the other two galleries feature cultural artwork. Museum Director, LuJuana Hood will be on hand to offer commentary and insight into the PAHMUSA galleries and exhibits.

Members of Dream Studio will wrap up Tower Square's Black History Month celebration with a special performance in the Citywalk Cafes at noon on Friday, February 22. Local students will perform specially choreographed dance as well as songs for patrons of the food court.

All of the events are open and free to the public.

The Dos and Dont's of Traveling With Pets
Consumer Tip Courtesy of Emerald City Travel

What's a vacation if you have to leave man's best friend behind? Travel agents say that more and more people are opting to bring their pets with them on trips. To make those trips more enjoyable for your pet and less of a hassle for you, here are some tips on flying with your pet from the travel consultants at Emerald City Travel:
  • Be sure to take your pet to the vet for a complete check-up prior to leaving, and let your vet know that the animal will be traveling with you.
  • Make sure your pet receives all necessary vaccinations and that you have any medications your pet may require.
  • Most airline and state officials require a clean bill of health in the form of a health certificate within 10 days prior to travel before allowing your pet to fly with you.
  • Try to book a direct, uncrowded flight if possible.
  • Always keep an ID collar with your name and phone number on your pet. Also have a color photo of your pet in the unfortunate event that he gets lost.
  • Be sure to travel with your pet's favorite toys, proof of vaccination and proper licenses.
  • Have your travel agent notify the airline of your pet when your reservation is made. Space for animals is usually limited, both in the cabin and in the cargo area.
  • Invest in a quality travel kennel that will allow your pet to move freely.
  • Ask your travel agent to call ahead to make sure your hotel allows pets.

New ItemThank You from the American Red Cross
Thanks to the compassion of downtown office workers and Tower Square patrons, the American Red Cross had one of their best turnouts during last month's blood drive. With 71 presenting donors, they were able to collect 67 pints of blood for use at area hospitals. That is almost double the number of donors American Red Cross officials had expected for January's blood drive.

The Dunkin' Donuts "Pound for a Pint" promotion, whereby donors were given a bag of Dunkin Donuts coffee after donating their blood, was apparently a huge hit, say blood drive organizers.

The American Red Cross' next blood drive at Tower Square is scheduled for Thursday, March 6 from 11am - 5pm in the Meeting Room.
