WHAT'S HAPPENING in JANUARY...

Tower Square to Host Y-SPEED Program

Thirty local track and field athletes will be in training inside Tower Square from now through March as part of the Y-SPEED program sponsored by the Springfield YMCA.

Y-SPEED (Speed, Performance, Endurance, Education, Development), is a city-wide indoor track club for local athletes (boys and girls).  The students, ranging in age from 5 18 years old, will be using the space next to Lorilil Jewelers on street level for training purposes in the afternoon on Mondays and Thursdays and on Saturday mornings.

Santa Breakfast Proceeds to Benefit the Jimmy Fund

Last month's annual Tower Square Breakfast with Santa was a hit for local families who came to celebrate the season with Santa and his elves, but it also ended up being a special event for the Jimmy Fund.

Proceeds from the event will be going to the Jimmy Fund, which is the charitable organization of choice by Santa Breakfast volunteers.members of the Central High School ROTC.

Students from the ROTC have helped to operate the Santa Photo station, craft station and registration table at the Breakfast with Santa for the past five years, as a community service project.  Because of their helpful efforts each year Tower Grill (who prepares and serves the breakfast at cost) and the Tower Square management office donate the event proceeds to the ROTC students, who in turn select a specific charity to give the money to.

This year the students agreed on the Jimmy Fund, a nonprofit agency which supports the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world.

Festival of Trees Has Banner Season Thanks to You!

Thanks to the generous donations from sponsors and patrons who attended the Springfield Boys and Girls Club's Festival of Trees held in the Meeting Room, this year's festival netted more than $48,000 for programs to benefit local children who attend the Boys & Girls Club.  According to SBGC officials, that's an increase of $6,000 over last year's event proceeds.

An estimated seven-thousand people came to the two-week Festival of Trees last month, purchasing raffle tickets to try to win one of the one-hundred beautifully & whimsically decorated donated trees.

Patrons also had the chance to vote on some of their favorite trees (see photos below).

This was the 9th annual Festival of Trees, the 7th year for the event to be held at Tower Square.
