WHAT'S HAPPENING!
Gandhi's Grandson & Two Tenants Honored at Tower Square
Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, receives the UnityFirst.com Global Award at PAHMUSA in Tower Square last month for his life-long commitment to promoting non-violence.
Now two of Tower Square's tenants share something in common with Mahatma Gandhi's grandson...all three were presented with Mulitcultural Leadership Awards at Tower Square last month.
Arun Gandhi received the UnityFirst.com Global Award for his work as an author and founder of the MK Gandhi Institute for Non-Violence in Memphis, TN, and the newly founded Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute. Sharing Mahatma Gandhi's passion for non-violent conflict resolution, grandson Arun Gandhi, told the one hundred plus crowd attending the awards presentation at PAHMUSA that his non-violence philosophy is not a strategy, but a way of life.
Tower Square tenants Bobby Rentas and Diane Mitchell, co-owners of Something to Talk About boutique, received the Jawralak Award for the work they do with local young people. Diane, a fashion designer, teaches young women to sew and design fashions of their own. Bobby works with multiple community organizations and inspires others to start their own businesses.
The awards were presented at the Pan African Historical Museum USA (PAHMUSA) by representatives of UnityFirst.com and PAHMUSA. UnityFirst.com is a direct e-mail news service that reaches communities of color. PAHMUSA is an African-American museum that is housed in five areas on the upper level of Tower Square.
The two entities collaborate each year to recognize individuals both locally and globally who make a positive impact in their communities, and who inspire future generations. A dozen people were honored at last month's event.
Past recipients include Taj Mahal, a world renowned blues and jazz musician, who received the global award, and Benjamin Smith for his work locally establishing DREAM Studios, an after-school performing arts program located on street level at Tower Square.

Motorcycle Photos Available at Nuvo Bank to Benefit Local Charities

NUVO Bank President Jeff Sattler announces the many charities to benefit from Nuvo's
Cycle Shots weekly event, during a news conference last month in front of the bank
entrance where the event will be held Thusday evenings on Main Street.
NUVO Bank & Trust Company will be doing their part throughout the summer to help attract folks to downtown Springfield, as well as to support area non-profit organizations. Beginning July 2, Nuvo Bank will kick off Cycle Shots: NUVO's Nod to Non-Profits, a weekly event series offering professional photographs of motorcyclists and their bikes to benefit local charities.
Cycle Shots will take place every Thursday evening from 5 7pm on the Main Street sidewalk just outside of Nuvo Bank, right before the popular Stearns Square Concerts produced by the Springfield Business Improvement District, which start at 7:30pm every Thursday during the summer months. The concerts have been known to draw a nice crowd of motorcycle enthusiasts each year, some of whom have already expressed interest in having photos taken.
Each week three professional photographers will be set up on the sidewalk by NUVO Bank with their cameras, backdrops, computers and printers to quickly capture motorcyclists with their bikes. For those who don't have their own motorcycles, but who want to get in on the act, there will also be "prop" motorcycles available for you to pose with.
"We are a new business and we want to show our support to area organizations," says Jeffrey S. Sattler, President of NUVO Bank. "This concept is a new and unique way to not only raise awareness, but also to raise funds for local non-profits."
The cost will be $25 for each photo. Each week, a different non-profit will receive the proceeds generated from the event. This month the following organizations will benefit from Cycle Shots: The American Cancer Society, Melha Shriners Organization, YMCA of Springfield, Junior Achievement of Western Massachusetts, Brightside for Families and Children, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Children's Miracle Network.
Local restaurants will also be supplying food on select nights as well.
