The Simpsons Sofa arrived in Center Court last month as part of the cities promotional efforts to win the right to host the 20th Century Fox premiere of the new Simpsons Movie due
They were pretty hard to miss, but in case you didn't notice...Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa and Maggie Simpson paid a visit to Tower Square last month as part of the City's promotional efforts to win the 20th Century Fox Simpsons Movie contest. Replicas of the cartoon family were in Center Court to help draw attention to the city's quest to be named the official "Springfield" hometown of The Simpsons.

Cartoon-ish cardboard sofas with colorful life-size plastic molds of the Simpsons family were sent to all 16 of the cities vying for the dubious distinction, and the chance to host the 20th Century Fox premiere of the new Simpsons Movie.

"It's been a great opportunity to generate some community spirit for the city," explained Azell Murphy Cavaan, Community Relations Director for the Office of the Mayor. "The contest has been one big community effort, ranging from a community meeting to a grand finale video scene in Court Square where more than 200 residents turned out to be in the contest video."

As part of the contest, each of the cities was required to submit a 3-5 minute video showing just why their Springfield should win the Simpsons city title. The prop sofa seen at Tower Square was also used in a few scenes in the contest video as well. The videos needed to be post marked by June 25th in order to qualify for the contest.

The public will choose the winning Springfield via USA Today online voting. The winning Springfield will be announced on July 10th.

Star Spangled Springfield
Tower Square Proud to Sponsor Star Spangled Springfield!

Downtown Springfield will be alive with the sights and sounds of fireworks and patriotic music on Wednesday, July 4th, as the MassMutual Star Spangled Springfield celebration ushers in Independence Day 2007. Thousands are expected to converge on downtown Springfield to enjoy the celebration.

This year in recognition of the men and women in the United States military there will be a special program featuring comments from US Army SGT Mark Ecker, II, of East Longmeadow, who lost both legs this year while stationed in Iraq. The program is set to begin at 7:15pm on the steps of City Hall, followed by a concert by the United States Air Force Liberty Pops.

Later in the evening spectators will fill Riverfront Park to enjoy the colorful Grucci Fireworks to be launched from the Memorial Bridge at 9:30pm. The fireworks will have a musical simulcast on MIX 93.1 FM.

The entire event is produced by the Spirit of Springfield. To make a donation to the Fireworks Fund, send a check or money order made out to the Spirit of Springfield at 101 State Street, Suite 220, Springfield, MA 01103.

Tower Square is proud to be one of the sponsors of the MassMutual Star Spangled Springfield.
