Three local organizations have signed on to become part of Tower Square's new community display program. The Springfield Museums, City Stage & Symphony Hall and the Springfield Business Improvement District, are currently being featured in a display window on street level.
The newly themed "Celebrate Springfield" window will be used to promote non-profit downtown organizations and their events. For a small one-time design fee, the organizations will use the window as a satellite marketing location in a highly visible site directly across from Isabella Christine's jewelry store.
Currently the Springfield Museums is promoting their Dr. Seuss sculpture garden, City Stage & Symphony Hall is plugging the timely musical comedy Hair Spray, and the SBID is publicizing their free summertime concerts.
To learn the latest and the greatest about what's happening in downtown Springfield, stop by the Celebrate Springfield window on street level and see for yourself.

Internet Confusion Has Many Travelers Seeking the Personal Touch Tired of spending so much time on-line sifting through gobs of information in an attempt to find decent airfares, available car rentals, and the best hotel accommodations? If so, you are not alone, according to published reports.
Recent articles in the NY Times, Philadelphia Enquirer and Money Magazine report a shift in trends back to the local travel agent. The articles site problems that many on-line travelers are experiencing as they attempt to sift through an overwhelming amount of information on the internet.
According to Tower Square's local travel expert, Janice Webb, owner of Emerald City Traveler, consumers are turning back to travel agents or consultants because they want the personal touch.
"They want to speak to someone in person, preferably someone who knows their likes and dislikes," explained Webb. "They also want to reach someone who answers the phone when they are stuck in an airport and want to extend their vacation."
Webb also sites problems as a result of airlines outsourcing their work to other countries, causing long waits and language barriers, something that can be avoided by working with a travel agent.
Small agencies, like Emerald City Travel, are among the types of agencies prospering from this trend shift. Travelers are turning back to these agencies, which specialize in cruises, tour packages, and travel to specific countries and regions of the world.

Inquiring Minds Want to know...What Happened to Bart?
| | | One minute he was there, the next minute he was gone! Bart Simpson was sitting quietly on the sofa with his family in Center Court promoting the Simpsons Movie contest last month when he simply disappeared! (We are just talking about a movie prop, here!)
Stolen? Not at all! Tower Square's sharp security team immediately caught the video producer of the local Springfield Simpsons contest on tape as he hoisted the four-foot plastic likeness of Bart onto his shoulder and carried it out the Main Street entrance.
The reason? Bart was on his way to New York, with local video producer, David Horgan (aka "Bart Snatcher"), to be autographed by the Simpsons movie producer Mike Scully.
With Scully's autograph, Bart is now even more valuable, especially to fans of the show, which has a cult-like following. It's all part of the plan of local promotions experts, who aren't letting any grass grow under their feet, since losing last month's contest to Vermont.
The plan? To make some money for a wonderful local organization that helps children in the Pioneer Valley! The Springfield and West Springfield Boys & Girls Club will be the beneficiaries of a Simpsons' Auction!
Local promoters are auctioning off the autographed Simpsons Movie props and other unique items on a special E-Bay auction conducted by Leave It 4 Auction, a West Springfield firm specializing in professionally offered items.
Interested in getting in on the act? You can bid on the Simpsons auction items, some of which were donated by Simpsons creator and cartoonist Matt Groening, and producer Mike Scully on E-bay beginning July 29 through August 4th.
For more information on the Simpsons auction contact Azell Murphy Cavaan at 787-6100 or Tony Cignoli at 739-1005. |
Community Day Brings Park Alive
| | | | Forest Park's Zoo on the Go booth was crawling with excitement and children and grown ups alike enjoyed hands on interaction with some unusual wildlife. | The Farmers Market at Tower Square Park was hopping with activity during last month's special Community Day event. Complete with a strolling marionette performer, a sensational live concert by Janet Ryan and Straight Up, popcorn, lemonade, free homemade salsa and fruit cups, the afternoon was well received by office workers and residents who came out for the event.
What seemed to be one of the favorite booths at the market on Community Day was Forest Park's Zoo on the Go. Complete with a fat-tailed Gecko, baby chicks, boa constrictor, chinchilla and more, the zoo's tent drew quite a crowd.
Several community organizations participated as well, including: Dunbar Community Center, DARE Family Services, Tapestry Health, and the UMASS Coop. Ext. Agency.
The Farmers Market runs every Friday through September from 10am - 3pm.
The Community Day activities as well as the Farmers Market and live concerts on Fridays are all sponsored by the Springfield Business Improvement District and Tower Square. |
Farmers Market Office workers took time out of their busy schedules to enjoy the Farmers Market to purchase some local produce and baked goods. |
